STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.– Sundog Theatre Inc. is known for providing an array of acting classes to help Staten Island youth discover their love for art. Now, they’re using their passion to help another local theatre in need.
Queensbury Theatre — a company based in Houston, Texas — opened its doors as a donation drop off center to assist families in their immediate area affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Thankfully, Queensbury Theatre escaped major damage from the hurricane, but those around them are not so lucky.
In between hosting fundraisers, like a comedy show and benefit featuring performances by local music groups, Queensbury teamed up with Sundog Theatre in Staten Island to collect an abundance of supplies.
“Queensbury is helping their patrons and community members recover after devastation,” said Sundog Theatre Executive Director Susan Fenley. “This humanity shows artistic organizations are service-oriented whether it be for entertainment or survival.”
Some background info: Queensbury Theatre has served the Houston community for over 60 years. Formerly Country Playhouse, Queensbury was founded in 1956, where it opened with its inaugural play, “Personal Appearance” by Lawrence Riley. Their location moved several times, and in 1981 the theatre finally found a permanent home in Town & Country on Queensbury Lane.
“Though we are miles away, we want to help others through this Houston theatre,” Fenley continued.
